Rakhi or ‘the thread of love’ is the joyous occasion to celebrate the togetherness of brothers and sisters. We all know the festival of Raksha Bandhan popularly as Rakhi because it is by tying this thread that brothers promise to protect their sisters all through their life. With regard to the undying love and care that brothers and sisters share, there is a Vietnamese saying, ‘Brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet’.

Legends reveal that Significance of Rakhi is seeped in history. There are many background tales behind the Raksha Bandhan Celebrations. One such tale relates to the great King Porus who refused to battle with Alexander the Great. The sole reason behind his refusal was that the wife of Alexander the Great tied Rakhi on his hand prior to the war and prayed that he would in no way harm Alexander. Thus, Rakhi holds a great importance in the Hindu society and all over India.

Rakhi is generally observed on ‘purnima’ or the Full Moon day and falls in the Hindu month of Shravana. On this day, sisters tie the knot of love on her brother’s wrist. They wake up early in the morning and get ready for the puja. Besides, they also prepare yummy delicacies for their brothers. There is gift giving and gift receiving ritual too.

Most commonly known as Raksha Bandhan, it is day of religious festivity. In fact, the term Raksha Bandhan stands for the ‘bond of protection’. The festival urges brothers to save their sisters from all kinds of evils. In return, sisters pray for her brother’s long life and safety. It signifies brotherhood and spreads the message of love all over.
